Thursday I 27 September 2018 I 06:00PM

By Rodrigo B. Sumuob Jr.

In 2000, the Philippine College of Innovative Education (PHILCIE) was established with the decision of the Evangelista family. Only one thing is known and certain for the family then: the vision to establish an educational institution, to be a center for academic excellence that would cater to less fortunate but deserving students in Davao City.

It was in the same year that the PHILCIE library started its operation with an initial collection, mostly nursing books. The library was house in a small room with a capacity of forty-eight (48) students only. The library also served as the photocopying center of the school.

The first library in-charge was Ms. Mylene Estorba. To cope with the growing population and the needs of the clientele, the library was opened for service from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Moreover, On June 2007, Mr. Omer Tayco was hired to be the Bookstore/Photocopying In-charge.

The increased population prompted the SJPIICD Administration to build a new building. The library was transferred to the 2nd floor, left wing of the new building. Since it was very necessary to have a Licensed Librarian. On 2008, Ms. Jennie Dela Cruz (now Mrs. Rivera) was hired. Ms. Dela Cruz took her graduate studies while working in this institution due to a need of a Master in Library and Information Science. She finished her graduate studies and was promoted as Chief Librarian in 2011. She served the library for four (4) years.

In 2011, Mr. Nestor Tejero from his position as OSA and Marketing In-charge transferred to the library as the new Library Supervisor. However, Mrs. Rivera resigned from her position as Chief Librarian in 2012 leading to the hiring of Ms. Roselyn Antipuesto (now Mrs. Manalo) that same year. After six (6) months Ms. Roselyn resigned from her position and transferred to other school for good opportunities.

In March 2013, Ms. Mildred Bersabal was hired to substitute the post of Ms. Roselyn and on September that same year, Ms. Bersabal resigned from her position as College librarian. She worked only for six months and then transferred to another school.

Because of the great demand of library services, the SJPIICD administration felt the need of personnel vacated by Ms. Bersabal. On May 26, 2015, Mr. Rodrigo Sumuob was hired as Assistant Librarian to answer the lack of manpower of the department. Mr. Sumuob was the Periodical In-charge and later was in-charge of the Circulation area. Because of the growing collections of books, Mr. Sumuob anticipated a library system, a Follett Destiny Manager that would help the collections to be organized and easily be access by the students.

In September 2015, Mr. Ian Lodueta was hired to take the position of Ms. Antipuesto as College Librarian. On November that same year, Mrs. Melinda Alba was hired as Chief Librarian to conform to the increasing number of students.

To further provide the students with the state of the art facilities and information technology, the internet resources inside the library was upgraded. Eight units of computers were purchased and a fully air-conditioned was also housed in the department. The extension of the library was also constructed to cater the Senior High School students.

In March 2016, Mr. Lodueta resigned from his position as the College Librarian. He worked for six months then transferred to other school. On June 2016, Mrs. Estorba also resigned from her position as Library Assistant leading to the hiring of Mrs. Liza Jornales, a licensed librarian to replace Mr. Lodueta. She worked for three (3) months only then transferred to other school. On September that same year, Mr. Sumuob passed the Librarian Licensure Examination resulting to having two (2) full-time licensed librarians.

With an increased number of student population and due to lack of licensed librarian, Ms. Jean Sagranada was hired in October 2016 to be assigned at the Periodical Section. Unfortunately, on November that same year, Mrs. Alba resigned from her position as the Chief Librarian to look for new opportunities from other school.

In 2017, Ms. Mae Joy Antipuesto, library aide, was hired to be assigned at the new Senior High School/ Filipiniana/General References Section. On September 2018, Ms. Mae Joy took the board exam and successfully passed the librarians licensure examination after two days. At present, SJPIICD has two (3) full-time licensed librarians, one (1) support staff and two (1) student assistant. It has a total collection of 10,000+ which covers books, periodicals, theses, and non-print materials.
